Moderation

Moderation

Alcohol can be part of healthy adult lifestyle if used in moderation. The trick is to define what is “moderation.”

The general recommended medical alcohol limits are:
For healthy men up to age 65

Never more than 4 standard* drinks in a day
No more than 14 standard* drinks in a week

For healthy women up to age 65

Never more than 3 standard* drinks in a day
No more than 7 standard* drinks in a week

*What is a “standard” drink?

** It can be difficult to estimate the number of standard drinks in a single mixed drink made with hard liquor. Depending on factors such as the type of spirits and the recipe, a mixed drink can contain from one to three or more standard drinks.

If you drink more than the recommended limits, or want to find out if you’re drinking too much, visit the National Institutes of Health’s “How to Cut Down on Your Drinking. ”
