The Stronger Influence

Put Your Foot Down.

Set Expectations

Research shows that Hawaii teens list their parents as having the most influence in their lives. Therefore, letting teens clearly know what is expected of them can help guide them through life.

  • Set clear expectations for alcohol

    • The most important thing is to be clear that you don’t want them drinking until they’re at least 21.
    • Depending on your and your teen’s values, if drinking after 21 is acceptable, they should only do so in moderation.

  • Set clear expectations on how to behave

    • Even if alcohol is offered to them by an adult, it should be clear they are not allowed to drink.
    • They should avoid parties or gatherings where alcohol is present.
    • Before they leave for the night, they should tell you exactly where they will be, when they’ll be back, and where you can contact them.

  • Set clear expectations for school

    • Set goals for the grades you want them to achieve in school. Reward them if they meet those goals.
