The Stronger Influence
column 1

Be Prepared.

Before You Talk

Talking to your teen about alcohol doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. Take some time to think about what you want to say. Here are some things you may want to consider.

  • Your family’s beliefs about alcohol

People choose to drink or not for a variety of reasons. If you choose to drink, talk with your teen about the difference between adult and underage drinking and that with the decision to drink comes responsibilities.

  • Your expectations

Make sure you have clear expectations of your teen.

  • Why underage drinking is dangerous

Make your case. Explain the facts that drinking at an early age has serious health and legal risks.

Practice Listening.

Listening to your teens allows you to understand how they see things and to learn where they may be misinformed or unaware. You may not agree with their opinions, but by discussing your opposing views respectfully, you show your children that you value their viewpoints.
